GPU CUDA access in vm?

Is it possible to use NVIDIA CUDA inside of a virtual machine? I need to run some software that has direct GPU access, but I'm not sure if that's possible in a virtual machine.

@alexg is there any research going on anywhere to implement GPU access and acceleration for macOS guests without the direct passthrough option?
