I currently use McAfee Total Protection as my antivirus app, but I've grown tired of the pop-up messages I get from them for upgrades that I have no interest in. I understand from what I've read that Microsoft has a good antivirus app but I don't know how to iget and nstall it. Can someone tell me how?

Microsoft's built-in antivirus, Windows Security, is a good alternative. You can find it in your settings under "Update & Security" and then "Windows Security." It's simple to use and doesn't bombard you with upgrade prompts like McAfee. Also, consider checking out some user reviews or forums to get a sense of its performance.

Thanks. I installed it a couple of days ago. It was a bit of a struggle since in order for Defender to act on it's own, McAfee needs to needs to be uninstalled wasn't easy.
Defender has told me that I don't have any viruses but I'd like to be able to trigger a scan on my own. Do you know how to do that?
